Saint-Lô, the capital of the department of Manche, was captured by Task Force C of the 29th Infantry Division on July 18th, 1944. The city was an important strategic objective, and was heavily damaged during the Battle of Normandy.

When discussing with Captain Miller the Allied objectives required to capture the port city of Cherbourg, Captain Hamill makes reference to Saint-Lô.
