Sometime on or after June 9th, 1944, Staff Sergeant Hill was in Neuville, France when he and his men encountered a squad of Rangers, led by Captain John Miller, looking for Private James Ryan. Hill and his group had been separated from the rest of their unit by a German counterattack, and they set out with the Rangers in order to find their commanding officer, Captain Fred Hamill. After one of the Rangers was killed by a German sniper, Hill and the others stopped to rest while a messenger went off to search for Hamill. Sitting down to remove something out of his boot, Hill accidentally knocked over a section of wall which revealed a small group of Germans. Both sides raised weapons and voices, and the tense stalemate was ended when Hamill and another paratrooper arrived and fired automatic weapons into the Germans. With his sore ankles, one can only wonder if Sergeant Hill hadn't suffered a poor landing when parachuting into Normandy? |
