On June 13th, 1944, Wilson was a member of a small group of 101st Airborne Division paratroopers that were trying to hold the bridge that spanned the Merderet River in the French village of Ramelle. After a squad of Rangers arrived in the village in search of Private James Ryan, the two groups joined forces to defend Ramelle from an expected German attack. Although the paratroopers and Rangers fought valiantly, they were outnumbered and outgunned and were forced to retreat across Ramelle's bridge so that they could destroy it and prevent it being used by the advancing German forces. Wilson was killed as he sprinted across the bridge. Shot in the back, he fell into the Merderet and drowned. Stuntman Steve Griffin helped in identifying Wilson, who is shot by Steamboat Willie just seconds before Captain Miller is shot. |
