The German 346th Infantry Division was organized in 1942 as a static "fortress" division intended to garrison fortifications along the English Channel coast in occupied France. In 1943 the Division served in the areas of St. Malo and Brittany. In December of 1943 the division was reorganized as a mobile reserve and placed under the command of the Fifteenth Army. On June 6th, 1944 the units of the 346th Infantry Division were stationed to the east of Le Havre and the Seine River, and were commanded by General Lieutenant Erich Diestel. On D-Day+3 (June 9th) Captain Miller's Ranger company encountered troops of the 346th Infantry Division. |
