The British manufactured Hawkins mine was carried by paratroopers of the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions (Pathfinders, demolition groups and engineers specifically). The small size of the Hawkins mine allowed it to be carried easily by soldiers. In Saving Private Ryan a handful of Hawkins mines were used during the defense of Ramelle. The mines were placed in rubble along the edge of a narrow street and were detonated as German infantry passed by. |
