Fiction vs. Reality

Saving Private Ryan is a fictional story about fictional characters set against the historical background of a real event. Although much effort was made to make the film as accurate as possible, there are many historical and technical inaccuracies in the movie.

It can be difficult to determine the difference between fiction and reality, so simple codes have been used throughout the site to indicate whether the subject of an entry is primarily realistic or fictional.

Pages marked with an "R" indicate something or someone that is largely based on reality. Omaha Beach, for example, was a real location, even though the events depicted in the film are not accurate. In a case like Omaha Beach, it would be marked with an "R" and the entry would concentrate on the real events of June 6, 1944, and not the movie's version. The notes for the Omaha Beach entry would cover Omaha Beach as seen in the film.

Pages marked with an "F" indicate something or someone that is largely a fictional creation. Captain Miller, for example, was not based on the real commander of C Company, 2nd Ranger Battalion, and his character is entirely fictional.
