A bandoleer was designed to carry extra ammunition for weapons such as the M1 Garand rifle. Made of cotton cloth, each bandoleer had six pockets for extra ammunition magazines. When fully-loaded the bandoleer weighed approximately 3.5 pounds. Most soldiers were issued two bandoleers, and they were worn diagonally across the chest.
